Pencil Cactus (Euphorbia tirucalli 'Fire Sticks')
Also known as Fire Sticks, Red Pencil Tree, or Milk Bush, the Pencil Cactus is a striking, coral-like succulent native to Southern Africa. Its thin, colorful stems shift from golden yellow in summer to fiery red in winter—earning it the name Fire Sticks.
This fast-growing, drought-tolerant evergreen can reach up to 30 feet tall outdoors (or stay compact in pots) and thrives on minimal care. In full sun, the tips glow bright red, especially when slightly “stressed” by light and low water.
Care Tips
Light: Full sun to bright, indirect light (at least 4–6 hrs/day).
Water: Every 3–4 weeks, only when soil is completely dry. Avoid overwatering.
Soil: Fast-draining succulent mix with a slightly acidic pH (5.5–6.5).
Temperature: Prefers 65–75°F; protect from frost below 30°F.
Fertilizer: Once yearly in spring with low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer (max 5-10-5).
Bloom Season: Late spring to early summer — small yellow flowers that attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
Zones: 9–11
⚠️ Caution: The milky sap is toxic and can irritate skin and eyes. Always wear gloves when pruning or propagating.
Propagation: Easily grown from stem cuttings. Let cut ends dry before planting in dry, well-drained soil.
